Whitby, Ontario – On February 8, members of the Durham Region Transit Executive Committee (TEC) met to discuss various Durham Region Transit (DRT) initiatives and updates. Details and highlights include:

  • Launch of PRESTO contactless credit card payment: On Monday, January 23, contactless credit card payment became available for DRT customers. Customers now have an option to pay fare by tapping PRESTO card or credit card, including credit cards linked to smartphones and smartwatches. Read about contactless credit card payment.
  • Transit Service and Financing Strategy (2023-2032): A comprehensive overview of Durham Region Transit services and financing strategy was provided. The Transit Executive Committee approved a comprehensive multi-year service and financing plan for strategic priorities over the next 10 years.
    • Significant investments in revenue service hours to enhance access, frequency and reliability for customers
    • DRT’s E-Mission Zero Fleet Electrification Plan
    • New infrastructure and passenger amenities for an enhanced customer experience
    • Modern fare structure
  • Permanent Transit Assistance Program (TAP): The TAP was approved as a permanent product within DRT’s fare structure. Staff will report on the feasibility of expanding eligibility for TAP to include persons receiving assistance through other government support programs.
  • Abilities Centre Pathways program participants learn about DRT: DRT participated in the Abilities Centre’s Pathways program in the fall of 2022. The program is designed to introduce participants to everyday community settings and develop important functional skills. DRT representatives facilitated a session to help participants learn more about how to use DRT public transit services. After the session, DRT received a letter that the session resulted in 100 per cent of participants feeling confident in their ability to take the bus safely, plan a bus route, take the bus and pay their fare.
