Whitby, Ontario – On May 8, members of the Durham Region Transit Executive Committee (TEC) met to discuss various Durham Region Transit (DRT) initiatives and updates. Details and highlights include:
  • Summary from the 2024 Public Information Centre Series: In March and April, DRT hosted a series of Public Information Centre sessions to gather feedback from more than 700 community members on various transit-related topics. The sessions covered route expansions, accessibility improvements, and future service enhancements. DRT appreciates the valuable input received from residents and stakeholders during these events. Staff will assemble the feedback, along with input received through Customer Service over the past few months, when planning for September service updates and future service plans.
  • DRT continues to recruit and train staff: New employees are required to deliver the increase in annual revenue service hours approved in the 2024 budget. The new service hours will start to be implemented with the September service change.
  • Fare and Service Integration Collaboration Table update: The Ministry of Transportation Fare and Service Integration Collaboration Table reconvened to discuss plans and priorities for the 2024-2025 period. The province has broadened participation to include representatives from transit agencies across the Greater Golden Horseshoe and identified fare integration, service integration and specialized transit as priorities.
  • Rapid Transit: Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program: Region of Durham staff, on behalf of the Region’s Rapid Transit Office, shared an update on project milestones for the Durham Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit and Simcoe Street Rapid Transit projects.

Quotes

“Fare integration, service co-ordination, and specialized transit are essential to a positive customer transit experience; they are shared aspirations for transit agencies across Ontario - including Durham Region Transit. Through participation in the Fare and Service Integration Collaboration Table, we are finding ways to deliver a more seamless and efficient transit experience for Durham Region residents.”

- John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer

“Durham Region is entering an exciting time for public transportation. The 2024 Durham Region Transit budget was the largest annual investment in transit service hours for the region. As part of the commitment to enhancing transit services, DRT is hiring additional transit staff to operate, maintain and service the buses to deliver 44,405 new annual revenue service hours for scheduled service, and 15,000 new annual revenue service hours for On Demand.”

- Marilyn Crawford, Regional Councillor for the Town of Ajax, and Chair of the Transit Executive Committee for Durham Regional Council

“The Public Information Centre sessions allowed DRT to engage directly with residents and stakeholders gathering valuable insights on transit-related topics that will help us shape our growing transit system. We appreciated the active participation and opportunity to connect with those who participated.”

- Bill Holmes, General Manager of Durham Region Transit
