Durham Region Transit (DRT) is pleased to employ women in various roles within transit. Many of these women have unique and diverse backgrounds and personal interests. Ramiya is one of them. In search of a better life, Ramiya, along with her husband and three children, made the brave decision to leave their home in Israel and seek refuge in Canada.

Upon arriving in Canada 21 years ago, Ramiya took on the role of a school bus driver to ensure she was available for her children during their elementary school years.

As her children grew older, Ramiya found she had more time to focus on other interests. She began volunteering at her local church, organizing events for Mother’s Day, and helping with the kids’ ministry.

Ramiya believes it’s important for people to always have their sights set on the bigger picture even in difficult times.

“We can’t always see all of it, but piece by piece, you can start to see the big picture,” Ramiya says. “I encourage women not to give up, especially on days where we are struggling mentally and find it hard to be at peace. Your life can change from just a small encounter.”

Ramiya encourages others not to give up, especially when they may be struggling. She shares her experiences and victories, inspiring others to believe that anything is possible.

“When I look back and see all I’ve overcome, I am surprised, and I am proud of myself and thank God for where I am today.”

Ramiya’s story doesn’t end here. She looks forward to becoming more involved in her community by volunteering at women’s shelters and long-term care homes, hoping to make a difference in the lives of women around her and inspire hope.

Ramiya has worked at Durham Region Transit as an Operator since 2021. She says she was ‘honoured,’ when she received this role. Another step in her journey, another piece of her big picture.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we honour women like Ramiya, who inspire us with their strength, resilience, and unwavering spirit.
