Whitby, Ontario – On Wednesday, June 4, members of the Durham Region Transit Executive Committee (TEC) met to discuss various Durham Region Transit (DRT) initiatives and updates. Details and highlights include:
  • New Vice-Chair: Commissioner Garrod has been named Vice-Chair of the Transit Executive Committee.
  • Customer Satisfaction Survey Results: DRT presented the results of its 2025 Customer Service Survey, revealing a 70 per cent overall satisfaction rating. Riders reported top strengths in safety and comfort. Opportunities for improvement include better on-time performance, reduced transfer times, and more real-time communication to support riders.
  • Electric bus program update: DRT is set to receive 25 new battery-electric buses in 2026. These zero emission buses will operate out of the DRT East Depot in Oshawa, marking a significant step forward in the Region’s commitment to sustainable transit.
  • DRT service agreement with Ontario Power Generation for dedicated shuttle service: Starting this fall, DRT in partnership with Ontario Power Generation (OPG), will introduce a dedicated employee shuttle service connecting OPG and the Durham College Oshawa GO Station. This first of its kind employer agreement will provide sustainable commuting for OPG employees and serve as a blueprint for future employer pass projects across the region.

Quotes

“The launch of the OPG shuttle represents a forward-thinking approach to transit service delivery. It’s an example of how innovative partnerships can deliver practical solutions that benefit commuters, employers, the environment, and contribute to the economic vitality of our region.”

-        John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer

“On behalf of Durham Region, I’d like to congratulate Commissioner Garrod on his appointment as Vice-Chair of the Transit Executive Committee. As a strong advocate for transit in north Durham and beyond, Councillor Garrod’s leadership will be invaluable as we continue building a more connected and responsive transit network for all residents.”

-      Regional Councillor Marilyn Crawford, Chair of the Transit Executive Committee

“Our customers’ voices are critical in shaping the future of DRT. The recent Customer Satisfaction Survey reaffirms that we’re on the right path when it comes to safety and comfort, while also challenging us to do more. We’re listening, and we’re committed to taking meaningful steps to improve the customer journey.”

-        Bill Holmes, General Manager of Durham Region Transit
