Whitby, Ontario – On Wednesday, June 3, 2026, members of the Durham Region Transit (DRT) Executive Committee (TEC) met to discuss various DRT initiatives and updates. Details and highlights include:
Making it easier to apply for and use Specialized Services
The Specialized Services application process is being modernized and improved by:
- Standardizing policies and procedures.
- Enhancing the On Demand platform to automate application processing.
- Centralizing all records in one digital system.
- Launching a new online application so customers can apply digitally.
Throughout the summer and fall, DRT will begin rolling out Specialized Services booking through the DRT On Demand App (Via App). The rollout will start with customers registered with unconditional eligibility.
Once the rollout is complete, all Specialized Services customers will be able to:
- Plan and book trips without calling a booking agent.
- Track their vehicle live and see arrival times.
- Cancel trips easily in the app.
- View information about past trips.
Customers will continue to have the option to book trips by phone and call for trip updates. However, customers who use the app may need to call less often, helping reduce call volumes and wait times for themselves and others.
Upcoming fare adjustments on July 1, 2026
These fare adjustments support DRT’s long-term plan to improve and expand service, including more routes, more frequent buses, upgraded facilities, and new technologies. Fares remain a crucial revenue source for DRT, funding over one third of operational expenses. Paying with PRESTO saves customers money and is the most cost-effective way to travel. Website update
DRT’s website is being updated as part of a region-wide transition to a new web platform, replacing the current system. Customers can expect a familiar experience, with the same core information, web applications and services, presented in a modified design.
Reviewing customer feedback and improving DRT
DRT has launched a new program that assesses service performance by collecting real-time customer feedback from planning to destination of the trip. As of mid-May, nearly 117 reviews were completed. Service performance received the highest ratings—particularly for bus operator service delivery and customer service—which have been rated nearly perfect. A few areas for improvement were identified, and solutions are being considered:
- Next stop announcement systems, including exterior or interior announcements, or interior displays.
- Real time trip information displayed on apps (Transit App, Google Maps, etc).
- Customer litter at bus stops.
Supporting the next generation of trades people: DRT Apprenticeship Program
Since launching in 2025, the updated apprenticeship program has graduated three certified mechanics. It offers paid, structured training that combines in-school learning with hands-on experience and mentorship from DRT’s Maintenance, Safety and Training team. Graduates move into full-time mechanic roles—job ready and familiar with DRT’s fleet. The program is set to expand into additional trades to support future workforce needs and organizational growth.
Quotes
“Making it easier for customers to access, apply for, and use transit services is a priority and is critical to keeping residents connected. Enhancements to On Demand Services for customers registered with Specialized Services, including online applications and app-based trip booking, will provide a more seamless experience and greater independence for those who rely on these services.”
– John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer
“Licenced trades persons are critical for DRT to sustain service growth and our world-class bus fleet. When it’s becoming an increasing challenge to recruit licensed trades persons, the DRT Apprenticeship Program helps DRT to develop their own skilled trades people. As DRT continues to grow alongside Durham Region, this program reflects a forward-thinking mindset that supports both our workforce and our community.”
– Regional Councillor Marilyn Crawford, Chair of the Transit Executive Committee
“Fares are critical to keeping our transit system moving; in 2025 almost 40 per cent of operating costs were funded by fares. While fares are crucial to DRT’s success, customers can save more money by paying their fare using a PRESTO card, virtual wallet, or E-Ticket. An adult travelling regularly with DRT can save up to $10 a week compared to paying with cash.
