Whitby, Ontario – On April 29, at a special event held at Durham Region Headquarters, Durham Region Transit (DRT) officially launched its partnership with the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, an initiative that provides support and recognition for people with non-visible disabilities. This program helps make public transit more accessible and inclusive, ensuring that individuals with hidden disabilities can travel with confidence.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program allows customers with hidden disabilities to voluntarily wear a Sunflower pin or lanyard, while using DRT services. These Sunflower-branded products act as a discreet symbol, signaling to DRT staff that the wearer may need additional assistance, such as extra time to board or general support during their transit journey.
The program has already seen success in various municipalities across Ontario and internationally, including the Town of Ajax, where it has received positive feedback from residents for its efforts in promoting accessibility and inclusivity. This initiative will further promote awareness and respect for those who face challenges that are not immediately apparent.
DRT customers can order their Sunflower product online, at DurhamRegionTransit.com/SunflowerProgram/ If a customer requires assistance, they can call DRT customer service at 1-(866)-247-0055.
A hidden or non-visible disability is not always immediately apparent but can greatly impact a person’s daily life. These conditions can be temporary, situational, or permanent, affecting various areas such as neurological, cognitive, physical, and chronic health.
Examples of non-visible disabilities include (but not limited to):
- Learning disabilities
- Chronic illnesses
- Neurological disorders
- Sensory impairments
- Mental health conditions
