Durham Region Transit (DRT) was pleased to join The Shandex Group for the unveiling of a new bus shelter in front of their Pickering facility. More than just a place to wait for the bus — this shelter is a tribute in the Shandex and DRT communities.
Dedicated in memory of Jean-Paul Hamilton, a young Shandex employee who took the bus to work each day, the shelter stands as a lasting act of remembrance. It will serve hundreds of residents daily, while honouring someone who made a meaningful impact on everyone around him. This thoughtful gesture ensures that Jean-Paul’s presence will continue to be felt by colleagues, friends, and riders alike.
The investment was made possible through a partnership between Shandex and DRT, highlighting the important role transit plays in connecting people, supporting businesses, and building community across the region.
"This shelter is a meaningful reminder of how transit connects lives and stories," said Bill Holmes, General Manager of Durham Region Transit. "We’re honoured to stand alongside Shandex in celebrating Jean-Paul’s memory and supporting the community through this thoughtful tribute."
DRT and Shandex celebrated the occasion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 24, joined by Jean-Paul’s coworkers, cousin, and best friend, along with members of the Transit Executive Committee (TEC) and Pickering Regional Councillors.
