Whitby, Ontario – A major transit milestone is underway as construction is scheduled to begin on the first segment of the median Bus Rapid Transit system along Kingston Road (Highway 2) in Ajax. This transformative transit initiative will bring faster, more frequent, and more reliable service to communities across Durham Region and into Toronto. Residents and businesses can expect to see work begin soon, marking the first step in delivering one of the largest transit infrastructure investments in Durham’s history.
When completed, the Durham-Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit (DSBRT) will provide two-way transit service every five minutes, dedicated median bus only lanes, priority signals, and anticipated time savings of 20 minutes for transit trips along the Highway 2 corridor.
To support active transportation and improve access for all road users, the DSBRT project also includes new in-boulevard cycle tracks for bike users and wider, accessible sidewalks.
When: Construction for this section of the DSBRT is expected to last 18 months, from August 5 to end of 2026.
Where: The first segment is under construction on Kingston Road (Highway 2) from approximately 300 metres west of Harwood Avenue to Galea Drive in the Town of Ajax.
Why: Highway 2 is the designated route for the DSBRT. The project spans approximately 36 kilometres through the City of Oshawa, the Town of Whitby, the Town of Ajax, the City of Pickering and the City of Toronto.
Work will include:
- Construction of dedicated median bus lanes, median transit stop platforms and shelters
- Road reconstruction
- Traffic signals with bus movements
- Watermain and sanitary sewer installation
- Dedicated in-boulevard cycle tracks with crossrides, sidewalks with accessibility improvements, street lighting and landscaping

This project is partially funded by a joint investment by the Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario and Durham Region through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP).
