DRT Charity Golf Tournament Cheque Presentation to Special Olympics Ontario

​WHITBY, ON  October 31, 2012–  A cheque for $40,000 from Durham Region Transit (DRT) was presented to Glenn MacDonell, President and CEO of Special Olympics Ontario at the beginning of the Durham Regional Council Meeting today.
DRT General Manager Ted Galinis, Honourary Chair and DRT Deputy General Manager, Maintenance and Equipment Peter Chatoff and DRT Deputy General Manager, Operations Martin Ward, Co-Chairs of the DRT Charity Golf Tournament, presented the cheque.
Durham Region Special Olympics Sports Council Representatives Ryan Colpitts and Victoria Edwards and Durham Regional Police Services Chief Mike Ewles, Deputy Chief Scott Burns and Staff Srg Karen Moloney also attended the presentation event.
The funds were raised at the eighth annual DRT Charity Golf Tournament held on September 24, 2012 at Wooden Sticks Golf & Country Club, Uxbridge.  To date, DRT has raised a total of $355,000 from the annual tournament making DRT a Special Olympics Ontario ‘MAJOR Partner’.  “Special Olympics continues to grow, especially our children and youth programs. We have a good number of these programs in Durham Region. Without the generosity and funds which Durham Region Transit provides, these successes would not be possible”, says MacDonell.
Special Olympics Ontario is a charitable organization that receives less than five per cent of its operating funds from government grants. The balance of financial support is raised in communities through public and corporate sponsorships.
