Wednesday, December 17, 2008 - DRT & DRPS "Celebrate Safe"

WHITBY, ON, December 17, 2008 – Durham Region residents celebrating New Year's Eve are encouraged to leave their cars at home and take advantage of free transit and extended conventional service hours sponsored by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and the Manufacturing & Technology Centre (MTC).

"New Year's Eve is a special time of the year and should be celebrated safely by all," says Roger Anderson, Regional Chair. "DRT is pleased to partner with OPG and MTC with complimentary service for passengers to support safe travel during the festive season”.

The free transit is available for passengers beginning at 20:00 on New Year’s Eve and is extended until 02:00 New Year’s Day.  The free DRT extended service will meet the last GO Train arrivals from Union Station on New Year’s Eve at the Pickering Station (19:49), Ajax Station (19:54), Whitby Station (20:01) and Oshawa Station (20:08).

“DRT has partnered with the Durham Region Safer Bars and Communities Coalition and the business community to help region residents plan ahead and get home safely. Leave the driving to DRT on New Year’s Eve and ride for free after 8pm,” says Ted Galinis, General Manager, Durham Region Transit.

“The support of OPG and MTC is a fine example of how community partners can work together and along with DRT Operator’s we will make the New Year’s Eve celebration safer for all”, says Regional Councillor Nester Pidwerbecki, Vice Chair of the DRT Executive Committee.
