Safety Tips
General
- Plan to be at your stop 5 minutes prior to bus arrival time and never run for a bus if you are late
- Ensure your clothing, backpack and parcels clear the doors as you board or exit the bus
- Watch your step while boarding and exiting the bus, especially in icy conditions
- Wait for the bus to pass for a clear view of the road and traffic before crossing
- Whether moving or stopped, hold the grab rails for balance
- Keep the aisle clear for passengers at all times
- Stand back from the yellow caution line at the front of the bus or behind the operator to ensure the bus operator has a clear view
- Bare feet, skates or rollerblades are not allowed
- Offer front or priority seating to the elderly or disabled
- Move to the rear of the bus to make room for boarding passengers
- Do not walk to the exit doors until the bus has come to a complete stop
Children
- Assist children when boarding and exiting
- Children must be seated at all times
- Do not allow children to put their hands or head out the window or play in the aisles
Strollers
- Operators will request strollers be folded, and explain the safety issues--offering assistance if required
- Children should be removed from strollers when boarding, children in strollers may be wheeled aboard accessible, low-floor buses
- When traveling, children should be removed from strollers and seated or held securely on your lap
- Strollers should be folded if possible - if not folded, brakes must be applied
- Hold strollers securely or fold and store between seats to keep aisle clear for passengers
- Strollers, parcels and large items must be placed to keep the aisles clear and not interfere with other passengers
- Passengers with strollers are encouraged to move toward the back of the bus or park in the wheelchair accessible area.
- If space is not available for passengers with strollers an on-duty Supervisor is advised
- Passengers will not be denied service based solely on refusing to fold strollers
Pets
- Pets must be leashed and muzzled or carried aboard in a proper cage
- “Working” dogs for persons with disabilities are allowed on buses
Security
- For extra security, sit near the bus operator at the front of the bus
- If you are in any difficulty, speak to your DRT Operator immediately, your Operator can summon emergency services or police
- If you are lost ask the operator for assistance
- A “request stop” program is available for women travelling alone at night; the program allows exit between regular stops, close to a final destination
